Manish talks about why he volunteers with Keep Active

Who you are?
Manish Gandhi

Bit of your background
I’ve worked in a number of different professions but am currently settled in Quality assurance and auditing. I’ve done a lot of travelling over the years because I have a wanderlust for new cultures, architecture and discovering new landscapes. I also am an amateur travel photographer. I started ‘backpacking’ at the age of 21 and am still curious with itchy feet – I’ve recently travelled in Armenia and Georgia.

Why you chose to volunteer for Keep Active?
I came across the advert for a Keep Active volunteer in the Evening Standard newspaper. I had wanted to volunteer in a role than involved activity and this role seemed ideal. I work full time in Central London so I could spare only an hour or 2 at the weekend and this role gave me that opportunity.

What do you enjoy about volunteering for Keep Active?
Keep Active are very well organised and they keep in regular contact with their volunteers to see how things are going. I enjoy helping individuals improve their physical ability over the 9 week period and witnessing the difference it makes to their self-esteem, confidence and physical ability. The individuals really vary from one placement to another and Keep Active check to see that we are compatible.

Do you feel you are making an impact as a volunteer? If so how.
I do feel I’ve made a difference as a volunteer. I’ve seen how, from week 1 through to week 9, the individual has been able to achieve their objectives and regain their independence. I have a sense of pride for all the individuals I’ve helped make a positive impact on as a Keep Active volunteer. The individuals are able to recover from their accidents by regaining their strength, self-confidence and self-worth. They also enjoy the company volunteers provide and the benefits that exercise brings to the body and mind.
