Why Do We Need Your Help?

Daisy is 87 and lives alone since her husband died 15 years ago in tragic circumstances.  She can’t walk well and wears a metal leg and foot brace, and so finds it difficult to go outside to the shops.  Sadly, her memory is fading and she is also showing signs of early dementia.  Daisy does have a daughter but she lives abroad so rarely sees her and her friends have now died or are not mobile themselves.  Her GP contacted us because she was increasingly worried about Daisy who was socially isolated and having difficulty remaining independent – so that is where we stepped in.

Our volunteers who run our Homeline safe & well telephone service ring Daisy every day to check how she is, and if there are any immediate issues that require our attention whether health related, paying bills or hospital visits.  We also matched her with a lovely volunteer who visits her each week and sits and chats with her and sees how she is doing.  When no one remembered her birthday, the volunteer took her out to lunch which cheered her up no end.

So it is people like Daisy whom we try and help to have a better life and to remain independent as long as possible.  In fact, we currently help 200 older people with an average age of 82.

But we help other people too, people with learning disabilities to lead a fuller life supported by a volunteer mentor, people with physical disabilities to remain independent in their own home, families on income support with very young children to remain safer in their home.  And of course without our wonderful 220 volunteers we can’t do any of this.

You can help Daisy and many others by making a donation to Bishop Creighton House.
